What's the best easiest coin price guide with photos on the market?

Curious what's the best coin price guide book out there. I'm looking for something that has prices that are real close to what collectors are paying and also one's with good photos of the coins and the more common coins....not very rare strange coins. Just something simple that I can give my son for christmas to help him start his collection. Also, curious if coin price guides take into account the current value of the metal in them.

The first book any collector of US coins should have is "A Guide book of United States Coins" by R.S. Yeoman. This is also known as the Red Book and is available at most book stores and coin shops. Encourage him to read it as it has a lot of basic beginner information. The pricing is stale because it is published only once a year but it is a good indicator of relative values for coins. I would also suggest getting him a grading book so he can learn to grade the condition of the coins he finds. Being able to properly grade a coin is the key to understanding the values placed on a coin. For coin values I would suggest he get a copy of CoinValues magazine. It is published monthly, although it is not necessary to get a new copy each month as the prices do not change that dramatically that quickly.

As he becomes more interested in the hobby consider a membership in a local coin club and maybe even the American Numismatic Association. Both are great sources of information on the hobby.

While precious metals prices do influence the coin collector market to some degree price guides do not specifically track that influence as a seperate item. Prices paid for coins in the retail market will reflect precious metal content particularly for coins whose grades are low enough and coin type is common enough that they are worth more as melt than as a collector coin. This is learning curve stuff that most begginnig collectors should not be worrying about. Let the investors and dealers worry about this stuff and let him enjoy being a collector.

VERY FUNNY. COIN STUCK TO THE PAVEMENT
