Blue left ‘Running Scared' after Azerbaijan Win Eurovision 2011

This year's Eurovision Song Contest was hoped to be the year that the United Kingdom finally shook the decade of failures from its shoulders. After repeated unsuccessful entries, the BBC managed to rope boyband Blue into reforming, singing the über-contemporary entry 'I Can'. All eyes were on the Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf, to see whether the boyband would finally break the "nul points" curse.

Eyes were also on our neighbours in Ireland, after former X Factor contestants Jedward were selected to represent the Emerald Isle with their song ‘Lipstick'. The pair had already garnered a fair amount of celebrity gossip when plans to bring a pair of tigers onstage with them were rejected, with German organisers hosting the event refusing to give them permission.

After a whopping 43 European countries applied to participate this year, the UK certainly had a fair share of competition on its hands. Two semi-final stages were held in the week preceding the final, whittling down the grand final entries to 25 countries. The United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany and Italy were instantly qualified for the final after their "big five" status in the European Broadcasting Union.

The contest started with some calm and mellow entries from Finland and Lithuania, but Irish contestants Jedward stormed the evening with their synchronised performance of ‘Lipstick', wowing the packed Esprit Arena. Commentator Graham Norton even remarked at how positively loud the audience's reaction was.

Celebrity news sources were left asking "what were they thinking?" after Moldova's ZdobşiZdub performed their track, ‘So Lucky'. Many were left wondering whether the country was taking the contest seriously after the Moldovan act entered the stage wearing gnome-like hats accompanied by a unicycling fairy.

In the end, the evening went to the Azerbaijani duo Ell/Nikki with their soft rock entry, ‘Running Scared'. It could be said that the United Kingdom had indirectly won the contest, as One Half of the duo is in fact a North Londoner. Thankfully, the boys from Blue did a more than stellar job, finally bringing Britain out from the bottom of the charts to finish at a respectable 11th place.

Overall, the evening will be remembered as one of the must-see televisual events of the year, only just being knocked off by Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding. A whopping 12.7 million viewers agreed, with viewing figures for the evening reaching a 10-year high. With next year's contest being held in the Azerbaijan capital of Baku, the United Kingdom's follow-up act will have to work hard to either match or beat 11th place.
